    Author | Date February 5, 2013
The Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Office for Civil Rights (OCR) is reporting a health data breach at Westerville Dental Center in Columbus, Oh. that took place between Dec. 2 and 3. The dental center, according to The Columbus Dispatch, reported the 850-patient breach on Dec. 21.
Three laptops were stolen from the facility in early Dec ember, but exactly what type of data involved in the breach has yet to be determined because HHS is still reviewing the specifics of the breach. And it wasn’t reported whether Westerville Dental Center has officially notified the patients affected by the laptop theft.
Beyond the basic information missing from the story, there’s no indication whether the laptops were encrypted or not and what type of safeguards were in place. Look for follow-up information on HealthITSecurity.com.
